Apparently in your world there is no rust. You've never seen the affects of liquid road brine and ferrous metal. Would have figured that was trying to cut a cap rather than a cross the way that was mutilated.

I can one-up that... Inter axle shaft in a 30 year old fertilizer truck. That's when I finally bought a portable U-joint press for trucks.

Fertilizer is pretty nasty as well. Changed out quite a few front axle U joints where the snap rings were pretty much non-existent. Never used the on truck U joint press before. To me anchor pins are a bigger struggle as far as heavy truck- trailer stuff goes.

Fertilizer spreader has a drive shaft on bearings for the spreader that runs right below the apron that "leaks" granular. When the bearings go, you pretty much torch the whole thing off and start building new.

Mine is an older OTC press that bolts on to the cap bolt holes. I have been looking at the new Tigertools model. I have their slack adjuster puller set and it's awesome.

I have the snap on anchor pin press that works really well on about 1/2 the ones I come across. Otherwise I torch the protruding ends off and blow thru them. I recently bought a .498 air hammer which definitely does the job faster than my long barrel snap on. The lisle driver set does a good job on the " open" style spiders on Meritor drive axles.

After the alignment pin is pressed, and welded, into the collar.................it's slotted to receive the driveshaft tube.

Dummy shaft tube used to check fit

Another gage is made for the output end of the the shaft.

Second collar slotted on both sides, and checked for fit.

Components stack. Input collar with alignment pin, dummy shaft, second collar, rear output sleeve

This stupid drive shaft is round. I figured I'd better try to bone up on round stuff, before I trash the new shaft.

The hardest thing is training your hand to roll. It's not something I do..........I don't weld round stuff like the pipe guys do.

When I time the roll, it's presentable

When I don't time it right, or do it clumsy, it gets ugly.

Add arc blow to the mix, and it's Wild West

Keep piling the welds up the side of the pipe........

Towards the end of the session, I was getting a bit more consistent.

Anyways............it's a work in process

Atom Arc 7018, 125amps, early afternoon, wind from the South at 6mph, all welds freehand w/o bracing any body parts. That ought to cover the pra-mee-ters

Go through a few more rods tomorrow, and I might ready to glue the driveshaft together Tain't gonna be purdy, but it ought to be serviceable.

I'm doin' good just to get a simple stringer to stay together without spilling the puddle One pass on a builtup, and I called it a day.......................why tempt fate

Hell, I can't remember the last time I did any out of position welding, except for those pipe stands (which probably ain't gonna get used).

I'm just trying to get back up to speed on stuff I don't do anymore, and stuff I was never good at, didn't mean to offend anybody. Thought folks might enjoy it.

Yeah, it's still on the schedule this Winter. Actually the pipe stands will come in handy I guess. Can run some heavy wall oilfield pipe on them, and use them to support the crane components for leveling when I'm doing fitup. I used to do everything by eye, now I can use a level...........be 10x quicker. I've been looking at a nice Empire 24" magnetic level.

I have a beautiful older David White transit I guess I could use..............but even for me, that's sorta overkill
