Multiples warp, one of the recommended ways to reduce it is larger single pass welds. I agree that its all fine and a good way for the OP to do it. I was looking for a pic or 2 with this saddle but everything I have is well painted over.

I like one pass welding it save labor.

To do multiple passes you a short welds on each side. Then the last pass is a cover pass.
On columns you see the column move as you weld and you can control where the column is plum.

Nice grinder fit up. Some 1/8" E7018 should fill it in nicely.

I bought a pair of these Pipe Pro Guides (yellow, and purple) from Grainger, and they have come in handy for the stainless tubing that we use a lot. They are magnetic, so they work even better on regular steel pipe.

The patterns are really cool. Even a caveman could do it. I had it in school, in apprenticeship but cant remember squat. I copy some, trim up a pattern and then toss it in a drawer when I am done. If I had to do something really important would be screwed.

That is what California needs caveman welders.

In the field for this job if I had to make this up on the go in real time/speed etc would torch cut the thing, chip any slag, might trip it again if I had to and scuff and square a little with a grinder and get it to 1/8 or so them fo tacks in gaps and fill any gap with a little 6010 stripper pass and come back with a 7018 big ole smooth fatty over it shooting for about 85% penetration or so and leave a little for control and appearance so once its done there be no doubt at first glance.

The op didnt lose anything welding the snot out of this. If I was hired to do it would have welded this for appearance and speed. Its so overbuilt the rest is irrelevant. Would have wanted to chip, brush and ready to paint.

Re: Would I be wrong to use 6013 over 7018 on this?

I had a cuy comment a while back. I was fixing a failed weld install and ground the old crap out really well and smooth back like new, it happened to be reached but wes upo in an overhead and the guy asked something and then sat on a bucket and said,,, when you started to weld I could tell the difference between it and the last guy. The spot looked worse than it was and my favorite weld is really overhead fillet, this was 1/4 angle lapped on to a 1/4 plate maybe with a pretty good view, 115 run the whole rod at a time. Turned the corner without stop.
If I was a daily welder, a working welder and did this regular might even step up to a 5/32.

Re: Would I be wrong to use 6013 over 7018 on this?

Made the anchor plates today. Turns out itís some form of hard steel 3/8Ē thick. (We got a big scrap of it from a junkyard)

I tried and failed miserably to drill it with an annular cutter, and all I could get through with was a cobalt drill and it was destroyed after, so i threw it back on the plasma. Still came out pretty good but i was hoping for nice countersunk chamfered holes. I chamfered it by hand with a carbide burr instead. Oh well, free steel.

The 14g piece around it was how I re-aligned it for the plasma cut holes after the fact so I didnít have to waste the disc.

Been a while, we needed better weather for the slab.

But happy to say she’s standing up and bolted down. Feels rock solid though as I anticipated it does have some sway/flex.

The lift went exactly as planned landed right where we wanted.

Will be anchoring it to the building at 4 points this weekend.

I like it. Simple. Anchors are gonna take the sway out.

Re: Would I be wrong to use 6013 over 7018 on this?

Got a fair amount done today.

Finished strapping it to the building. Rock solid now.

Worked my way up, bottom anchor and then was able to safely stand up on the middle deck for the upper tie back.

Moved on to putting in the uprights of the hand rail and ladder pin mounts. Had a safety tether working on the upper deck.

I made a 30 foot lead for the multimatic worked out great.

Hoping to do some rigging and lift the ~300 lb top piece up there this week.

Iím quite fond 7018 now, weíve grown to understand one another. The new batch I just opened welds great but for some reason the slag is very glass like. I guess heavily silicon deposits? Itís not porous itís just on the surface and chips right off.

Hoisted the top piece up today and got it welded on 3 passes per leg. Railing going around it for further support and bracing underneath it as well.

Used some of our rigging equipment to make a gin pole. That one will hold 5000 lbs.

Made up this anchor plate with some 3/8 we had remaining.

This will be going on the concrete wall across the parking lot from the tower, for anchoring rope systems into. Really just for convenience sake.

Will be held on by 4, 0.75Ē Hilti wedge anchors. Spacing is 7.5Ē to meet code on the wedge spacing.

Re: Would I be wrong to use 6013 over 7018 on this?

Got the top deck railing done which was probably the worst part of this build.

95% of the tower is scrap metal. The railing is 1Ē pipe had to clean every piece off on a wire wheel. Notched everything by eye with a grinder as I donít really have a need outside of this project for a tube notcher. It took forever though.

Also mounted the anchor plate. Bolt heads will get cut down on that.

Thanks. I’m totally winging it so I’m glad it’s gone to plane so far. Heck I’m shocked it came out dead level honestly lol.

Good opportunity to leave my comfort zone as a guy who only works in a shop environment. Gives you an appreciation for the guys who do this in the middle of nowhere with just their truck.

Re: Would I be wrong to use 6013 over 7018 on this?

Was away from work for a few weeks

Finally got a floor in. We were originally using the fiberglass yellow stuff and it was crap when I cut the access hatch in it.

We got very lucky and had heavy bar grating from a local shop donated to us. They gave us 3, 20í X 2í pieces. It is easily the most miserable thing Iíve ever cut up. To keep it clean i did it with a sawzall and carbide Diablo blades.

7018 vertical has gotten a lot better. Far from magazine worthy but I feel comfortable doing it now. That weld was done laying and hanging over the edge it was super awkward.

Got the little catwalk thing on also it will get bad grating too.

But that basically wraps it up for the tower itself. Gonna add some flare to it eventually.

    Before 2018 I would agree.
After 2018 fluxcore like E71T-11 all the way for speed . If I was working by the hour it does not matter either is great.
I like stick it is more fun but slower

Appreciate the input but We are wayyy beyond the initial question of Rod type

I ended up using Forney 7018, the issue was ultimately the Lincoln 7018AC sucked.

The Excalibur was 3x the price so I went with the Forney.

My skill is surely still lacking for out of position stuff. But i think for my needs it’s more than acceptable now and have confidence when i flip the hood down.
