    MIG Weld Hammer

I needed to buy a newBall Peen hammer for my work truck. I stopped by Home Depot, they had a goodly assortment of framing hammers, but no ball peen hammers, the racks are all empty. I chanced to see a rack labeled Mig Weld Hammer. I was curious about what kind of hammer I would need for MIG welding. There was another rack with the same label and it had one hammer in it. It was not a hammer for MIG welding, but rather the head is welded on to the handle shank.
I was a little disappointed, as a MIG hammer might be useful, for banging out nozzle deposits, hammering off wire that is too long, beating in a new tip into a stripped out nozzle. It would really help you produce a bang good weld! Oh well, maybe I’ll stick with ball peen hammers instead.
As a side note, in addition to the ball peen hammer, there was not a can of black spray paint in the store, no 100’ extension cords, no 5 pound fire extinguishers, and no DeWalt 11 amp, 4.5” angle grinders. So I will have to start hunting on my way to a job tomorrow.

You had me going until "beating a new tip into a stripped out nozzle"

Strange that you had no ball pein hammers available... they're everywhere over here. Maybe it's the home depot market.

I've just introduced the lads in the workshop to the joys of Channelock welding pliers, I never realised that they didn't have any until recently!

Googled this hammer and it just looks like dewalt is just doing some creative marketing of a framing hammer.

Seems to be some plague induced supply chain issues.... I've noticed a lot of half full store shelves lately... or maybe Lis2323 is buying them out...

    That a lot of hammers.
I have a ball peen that sits in a drawer.
I use for most of my work a 4 pound hammer and a chipping hammer.

I have a very small ball peen and all it gets used for is cutting gaskets.

I like a 4 ounce ball-pein hammer. One of the handiest tools in the shop. It's all in E=MV^2 !

    Re: MIG Weld Hammer

Just to clarify, I do have lots of ball peen hammers. The one on the truck really wouldn’t pass any sort of job site safety inspection, nor would a lot of wood handled hammers, so I was looking for something a little more osha compliant. I check 2 Ho Des, and hen Lowe’s. Lowes had 1 ball peen hammer, a 24oz Craftsman, which I bought.

I buy only ambidextrous hammers, as I often switch up depending on the direction the blow needs to come from.

    Re: MIG Weld Hammer

I like Estwings (when the face grind is nice! Some come with more of a helical patterned face rather than round, and IMO that says something about the overall attention to quality at the factory on a premium priced tool).

That being said, my local lowes and home depot haven't had any Estwing ball peens for about 6 months now, and before that it was just a couple 32 0z and one 24 oz.

I've used and abused the yellow fiberglass handled harbor freight set ball peens (4 hammer set, and CHEAP), and have zero complaints!

I would encourage anyone to pick up a knock-around lend the neighbors kid set, and if you're like me you'll be surprised to find that they become part of your daily rotation.

    I agree
    I have a 10 pound hammer too.
It is no fun having to use a 10 pound hammer. It will move 3/4" plate.

This is kind of how we got to a lott of cheaper tools.. The quality idea is still hard to let go but we just bought 2 new saws, I like the cheap one better actually. We bought some wrenches this way, started off as tractor tool box knockarounds and to use for the day and 20/30 yrears later are still in severe service. It has come to a lot of power tools also. Now has progressed to welding machines.

    Re: MIG Weld Hammer

I think people have a warped sense of value,,, Snap guy gives 50$ off a 700$ set of wrenmches and he is a great guy. Sears or Walmart sells a 50$ set of wrenches almost as good and do the same work and they robbing you somehow.
Easy to be impressed with a 400$ drill but where the real "value" is today is not the hi end even with a great price or the middle but 1 step off the bottom in the economy models. While some have had luck with a 10$ HF grinder its not the same as a modern generic cost about 30 which is as good as 100$ one and to tell the truth now that I am used to them like them as good or better.
28$ occilatiing tool at Menards junk, 45$ one as good as the DeWalt or Rigid and came from the same line plus case and blades. Comes with a better cord.

And if you can't fix it with a hammer, it is surely an electrical problem.

Looks like Thor’s hammer on the bottom. That’s too much selection. How do you pick a hammer to use? Different hammer everyday?
