2-3 times a week I used to stack Super B flat deck trailers for the return trip on the ferry to save per foot $ charges.
Couldn't find a decent cheap used BIG forklift with 8 foot forks. I used an R/T forklift on each side and had to back the trailer under it.
Kinda dangerous and time consuming. Geez. The things we've all done....

I once unloaded a dead 9020 Case excavator from a drop deck with four 6K forklifts and a 966 Cat loader holding the boom up. I probably looked like an orchestra conductor running that lift, setting it down was even more fun.

We had an extensive meeting beforehand. The stupid part was the machine was sold for scrap price (woohoo for me) because of a large oil leak. Installing a new engine oil filter with a GASKET cured that problem.
I had a back axle come unglued on a big old 5020 with duals and cab. The dealer shows up with a high deck and a forklift to load it. I got to steer the tractor while we were winching it up the ramp, with the truck driver on the forklift holding the back of the tractor up off the ground. It wasn't too bad until the forklift hit the ramp. The back of the tractor is on the end of the forks, so when his angle changed, I shot straight up in the air about 3 ft.... was not a good feeling when you're listening to the forks slipping and sliding and grinding under the tractor. No ROPS in a Cozy cab, and I was looking real close at those floorboards...

I should have got a few more pics, it has a nice deck between the cab and crane that would be perfect for a welder and compressor.
I want long with contractor sides and a removable bulkhead for a 3/4 dump. Mine is 20 ft, I have a foot used for spare tire and dunnage, I could really do without the tire here. I want tandem, 24 ft, 4 ft for tools as you mention and bigger crane than I have. Being able to make up dump would make for the ultimate scrap machine, put mag on crane.
They can keep the rotator but I like the tilt. I should have got a car load pic we did the other day, had a car trailer behind the truck and used the boom telescope as a winch.

You still want roll back though. It's nice keeping that load angle minimal.
We had pretty much a full range of truck sizes on the farm (none with crane though)
Very rarely did I ever send out one of own trucks to pick up freight.
It was usually more cost effective to have the seller look after it. That kept my drivers and equipment free for making money delivering my own product.
Speaking of trucks with cranes, I saw this one today. Kind of an odd setup but it should be useful for something. $40K is a little rich for me though.
From this picture it looks good and a pos family car that is nothing but expense cost 40 large anymore. This would be the ultimate scrapper truck.
I can see that with an airpak, big torch bottles, heavy plasma cutter and big impact

I do a lot of stuff with it. About the only thing i use a loading dock for is tractors and bulldozer which are too heavy for the crane. I have excavated, tailored equipment, added lugs etc to be able to handle/haul for setting or service.
