    Cutting question

I am switching from acetylene to propane. Besides a new proper propane tip what else do I need to replace to my old Victor torch system? Thanks in advance.

    Re: Cutting question

If you look at dedicated propane setups they are different from acetylene kits. Doesn't mean you can't use what you have with the correct tips I recon.

The regulator is a 50 psi for Propane and a 15 psi for acetylene.

The hoses are T rated for the propane gas so they don't break down over time from the incompatible gas.

And of course the tips as mentioned.

Look at regulator part numbers. The middle number is max pressure. Acetylene 15 psi Propane 50 psi.
Hose types and sizes. 3/16 acetylene 1/4" propane. Propane is T rated for propane gas.

I took the acetylene equipment and put on propane tank and changed the tip.

When I started cutting with propane I never even knew that there was a different tip and hose for it

I'm still using the wrong hose

    The right heats up faster.
Since I would switch back forth between gas it always works great.

    Re: Cutting question

you can save lots of money using propane. a 20lb propane tank (BBQ size) will cut as much as three 140 Cubic Ft acetylene cylinders (maybe more). also the rose buds/heating tips for propane are way more effective if you need lots of heat fast. T-grade (teflon) hose is recommended. Propane deteriorates your regular acetylene hoses prematurely, though not overnight.

I've been using propane for years. love it, 1 30 lbs can is good for 4 bottles of oxygen. Plus you can leave it horizontal. Not quite as hot but cuts rusty metal better.

    Re: Cutting question

When first started it was acetylene for cutting.
Then 10 years using propane for cutting.
Next was Mapp gas for 20 years.
In retirement I use now acetylene for both welding and cutting. Only need one set of bottles.

On my Harris based torch, just a new tip. Kept using the same hose for years because I didn't know.

I haven't used acetylene for cutting or heating since the 90's.

Btw, look up setting the flame online. It's a little different. Also, raise the torch up a little extra, too close isn't effective.

    Re: Cutting question

On the smith torches I just change the tip. I don’t worry about the hose because we seem to wreck them fast enough anyway. Going from a propane to acetylene you would want to be more careful as the regulator is higher pressure
