Welder Dave update
A couple inquired about how I was doing so thought I should give an update. I was in the Cross Cancer Institute for about 3 weeks getting the stem cell/bone marrow transplant. Recovering zaps any energy I have and I feel lousy. I have trouble swallowing and can't eat solid food yet. It may take 3 month's or longer to recover. I hope it doesn't but I have no idea. Just holding a phone up or my arms lying on the bed feel like a workout. Only thing that keeps me going is most transplants have very positive results. The way I feel makes me wonder if I should have opted out of the transplant. I feel that crappy! I'm still kicking though and trying to stay positive but it's hard.

My boy is looking for a gene therapy or bone marrow transplant. I know it would suck for him so it has to suck for you. Keep your head up and keep moving forward.

My son went through pancreatic cancer surgery (whipple) 6 years ago. Included radiation and chemo for 9 months. Was hell, as he described it, but now cancer free. Keep on Keeping on. It does get better in time.

Sounds rough Dave, real rough. But you sound tuff, real tuff (keep it up). Try to log in every night or two, and conversate on here - not to go away, without posting for so long again. Theres been plenty of technical stuff come up around here, that ur helpful on. Also, were expecting at least 1 weekly update every week in this thread

Re: Welder Dave update
Hang in there!!
I gotta look at the latest CT scan last Thursday. Guy still isn't sure about the thing in the lung. Now he wants me to go through a pet scan. You can't tell me that all this damn radiation is good for ya. They say it's fine.............but they're not the ones having this crap done on almost a weekly basis since the whole thing started (I'm exaggerating I guess......seems to me there's been 4 cat scans, 5 mri's with radioactive dye, and now they want the damn pet scan) Great money maker for the hospital.
So................ya got the lung dood wanting scans............the heart dood wanting scans.............that's a lot of damn radiation.
BTW.........they apparently messed up the heart mri, so he wants another scan to make sure. Last scan showed arteries on either side of heart at 50% blockage, and about the same in the artery running down right leg. AND THEY HAVEN'T GOTTEN TO THE DAMN NECK YET.
I'LL KICK OFF THE GEIGER COUNTER AT THE AIRPORT
All kidding aside.............if you're at risk (smoking), why the Hell add a ton of radiation to the mix..........

I'll try. Glad that it's all covered except for my portion of prescriptions. Partners insurance covers 80% I think. It's not good when just the thought of trying to swallow something makes you gag and dry heave. I threw up the anti-nausea meds, which causes a lot of stomach pain.

Re: Welder Dave update
Well, I would rather be welding than feeling like death warmed over. I'm thinking of all the things I'd like to do on my property (MX and oval tracks) with my recently acquired road grader. I only used it a little but think it will be a game changer as far as track prep and drainage, etc. go. Waiting for the appeal forums on getting early Canada Pension disability benefits. I can't work a regular 9-5 type job 5 days a week. The person from CP even acknowledged it takes 6 to 12 month's to recover from a stem cell transplant and I can apply for early pension at 60. I'll be 59 at the end of April. We're talking 6 month's here. Gov't. throws more money away on useless crap and I guess some have to justify their jobs. On my land I can work at my own pace. Last year I'd go out for a day and need 3 or 4 to recover. Dr. said it's good I'm active but need to make sure to take lots of breaks. Really curious what he put in his report to Canada Pension.

Re: Welder Dave update
DAve, my dad had problems with swallowing, his friend (a doctor) told him to try a touch of coke cola before eating. It was explained that the coke has some effect on the muscles in the throat.Might be a total different scenerio but nothing ventured, nothing gained. Prayers your way.

Best wishes on the disability application, here in the US doctors records are KEY to a speedy case. In my case both the workmens comp claim and Social Security Disabilty claim were approved 4 days apart and on the first claim. It usually takes 3-4 appeals before getting approval. Prayers coming your way & best wishes my friend.

Re: Welder Dave update
Dave Im sure you would rather be welding somethin and by all means if you want to by all means do it, helps keep your mind off of the pain and such. When I was 40 somethin I tore up my knee pretty bad and after the surgery wanted to go back to work Doc said no way and the strippin folks didnt want me there due to laibility issues, so I built those ol Pipeliners I had and commenced to weldin scrap steel together and when I wasnt doin that I went huntin deer around the house just to keep my mind occupied. Doin that stuff kept me from goin nuts. 7 months or so later mid January I went back to work and the first thing I did was rub my hands in the coal dirt and smell it....I was that happy to be back.
Keep smilin tough guy you will get through this

Sure they want you to give you the pet scan, because your gosh darn mutant animal Sam.
Seriously I hope everything goes well. I think the welding you do in a day hits you with more x-rays than ten thousand Pet scans.
My father worked for Grumman Aero Space, and they used to have to take pictures of the project at every stage for the government. One of the guys laid the camera down next to a guy welding and when they developed the film there was a strange but recognizable shape developed on the film. It was a tool on the bench between the camera and welding ARC. So I think you will be ok.
Sincerely,
William McCormick

Re: Welder Dave update
Really hope that I can can improve my swallowing and get some nutrition in me. Go on Monday for IV nutrition but they are worried if I can't at least get enough liquids in my body. If I can't get my swallowing figured could cause permanent issues. The nutritionist said it's very hard to gain back lost muscle mass. I've lost about 28lbs. Trying hard to drink some Gatorade, smoothies and liquid meal replacements. Nutritionist also said it is why I have no energy and even holding a phone to me ear is like a workout. Getting from lying down to sitting on the bed takes a lot of energy and is a slow process.
I've had lots of tests and X-rays and aren't too worried about any radiation. I'm more concerned with getting better and if an X-ray finds something that will help the Dr's. great.

Dave, from what it sounds to me, like you been through the worst of it. So hopefully the biggest thing, is just getting your strength back, which will take time, and understandably so. Good to see your posts

Re: Welder Dave update
Dave..........I've been looking around at numbers.
Marrow transplants come in at an 85% success rate. The numbers are in your favor. I can hang my hat on that, and figure you'll pull out of this. It gives me hope that you'll be out of there one of these days.

Re: Welder Dave update
I do tuck my chin in to swallow my Pain med. Dilauded. I take 2 pills a day but the dose was lowered form 2 12mg a day to 2 9mg per day. I don't bother with other pills right now and the Dr. said it's fine till I can swallow better.

Re: Welder Dave update
I have to keep trying to eat soups and yogurt type consistency foods to get some protein and nourishment in me. I don't want to get admitted again and have a feeding tube down my throat. You never realize how much you hair keeps you warm until you've lost most of it. Oddly my hair seems to be growing back a little. Biggest issue is getting so I can swallow without gagging. Think I'm going to try some yogurt now.
