Called Steel & Pipe Supply about some 6" square tubing. Guy asks if I have an account. "No, but I've bought from y'all before". "We no longer sell to anybody that doesn't have an account because of the short supply". "I hope y'all enjoy the coming recession......F You".

I normally don't get hot over the phone. It's stupid. Accomplishes nothing. But this kind of hit all the wrong buttons. These guys were the friendliest buggers on the planet just last year............when they had iron sitting around in their yard gathering dust. Now, they think they're selling the cure for Cancer. Yeah............F' U says me.

Called local, and the 6" A-500 tubing is $22.99/ft in 3/16 flavor, and $29/ft in 1/4 flavor.

I believe I can get by with 3/16. The moment connection is weaker, but I can gusset to take the stress of the corners to prevent tearout, or buckling.

With prices what they are, it pays a guy to figure out ways to use lighter material. And use less material. Overbuilding is nice to talk about, if you don't have to foot the bill on something that's stronger than necessary.

The practice of Engineering has changed over the years. They no longer kneel at the alter of 4X, or other rule of thumb formulas. From what I understand, most failure analysis is based on a bell curve now. Statistical analysis. Lets you build weaker structures that are "just strong enough". Can't say as I agree with this, but I can understand the logic behind it. But God Forbid the day that an unforeseen stress gets applied to the structure.

A cover plate, or a strongback, used to be an ideal way to beef up a column against sway, or a beam against deflection...........but what with the price of steel nowdays, it's becoming less of an option. Your cover plate can add as much cost as increasing member size/thickness.

But only to bring the high prices down the retailers can not do on there own with out recessions.

The problem of needing a account is some they doing wend the retailer metal suppliers when making a lot of money.

I was whining a little about JD head bolts being $95 each, but the neighbor is working on an old Massey or something with 3 heads. Each head requires $1,000 in bolts.... $3k total, and yes, those are the cheaper aftermarket ones.

Not that big Dave, but you have to use the "right ones". These are about 5/8" at the machined shoulder and the longer ones are close to 10".... 3 different lengths and I think I bought around 20 of them. We're thinking the reason the head gasket failed after only 3,000 hrs is because the last overhaul got at least 3 bolts the wrong length.

That is very high price for a bolt.
Is that $95.00 each or a set.?

I had make special bolts 25mm size with 7/8" NF and about 6" long it took 5 minutes for each bolt . The 25mm was +- 0.000,2"

Torque to yield is a pain in the ***.

I did not buy the manufacturer bolts.
All need was the grade or tensile of bolt.
The manufacturers try everything for you to buy ther high price parts. They even will change the head of bolts so looks special. The reduced shank and roll the threads. It looks special too but cuts the cost making more profit.

About the best bolt 🔩 is 170,000 psi Rockwell C34.

Last week 4in sq was quoted 400. Called again today spoke to my regular salesman $385. He was on vacation last week. It is most frustrating … the inconsistency’s from salesperson to salesperson.

Wow... that's more than double by 4x10x1/8 checkerplate and in US $. We're hitting around .78 to .79 on exchange these days.

When I say “pretty good” it’s because I mean, I wasn’t nervous in anticipation of the pricing and I did not gasp or flinch when I heard the price. That price was from an unfamiliar vendor. She said no difference in 5000 and 6000 series aluminum pricing? I don’t do much aluminum, not sure it that is significant.
