Well Three Rivers that is a neat idea of the Radius platens to simulate larger wheels, 8" is as large as I can go. Looks like a great way to Hollow grind blades.

    Re: Shootr's 2 x 48 Belt Grinder Build

He originally designed them exactly for hollow-grinding knives. Before him, everyone was just using wheels. I even saw a guy get one of the drive wheels off an Abrams tank and use it. Beautiful bit of engineering in that, but it made for one really heavy wheel!

I'm thinking you could get the same idea if you simply bent some bar around something of the diameter you were wanting to mimic. It wouldn't be as easy as turning a chunk on the lathe, but it would get you there in the end. And no need for a big lathe.

that was my though, a plate roller would do just great to form a platen add on.

You lost me on this one... why a curved platen rather than a flat one? Wouldn't that be much the same as holding the object against the curved part of the wheel?

That's exactly the point. Sometimes, that curve is exactly what you need for the task at hand.

Knowing the exact size of the radius means you can fit the design of your work to incorporate it much like when you have a small-wheel adapter for your grinder.

Little bit of progress today. Took forever to make the hole by the "wheel" - plasma cutter is absolutely next on the list!

Just taking my time. Got the buffer mounted to the base plate. Could not get the vertical frame plumb - wound up shimming the buffer, now it's level and plumb. Put three feet on the bottom, nice and stable.

Tomorrow will be cutting the frame to accommodate the platen assembly, the buffer bolt access (thanks Vaughn), and getting the platen assembly mounted.

Around here your choices would be Jamieson's Irish Whiskey, Crown Royal, Bacardi white rum, some disgusting Scotch somebody left here... probably some Smirnoff Vodka for the girls... I gave up on the panty remover years ago.... personally I drink more beer to stay out of trouble... might be a few bottles of wine kicking around too. Time to make my homemade Irish Cream for Xmas.... goes great in the coffee in the morning...

Meanwhile, back to our original programming...

Good progress - I think this thing just might work.

Having fits trying to come up with a tension/guide wheel assembly. Best that would seem to work with my design is this:

    Name: 148979136-qm-Nj-KJaq-006.jpg
Views: 333
Size: 79.2 KB

Rough sketch - everything above the yellow line would be removed. The red is the arm and a spring. A pivot halfway along the arm.

A cleaner version would be OK, but I'm hoping something more stylish (and within my skill set) will pop into my head...

The yellow line should go from the top wheel down to the bottom wheel. You don't need the platen assembly surrounded by steel plate as that'll get in the way and doesn't serve any purpose.

Think of it like the Eiffel Tower rising up from the base plate. A glorious design of simplicity and elegance, with naught more than is absolutely needed.

    Re: Shootr's 2 x 48 Belt Grinder Build

Early on in the thread, it was inferred that the 1/4" plate would be barely adequate (unless braced) to support the other pieces.

The first sketch took that to heart to maintain as much mass as possible. I was kinda looking at it as a more brutish angular form than curvy.

    Maybe something like this:

Looks like a good place for springs. Any thoughts on how much tension is appropriate?

If in doubt, I would attach it to something like a threaded rod so you can adjust the tension when you get using it.
