    Air operated slag peener

Going to be doing an MSD Shear soon at work. Says this tool must be used. Is it true? How is it done most commonly? Any tips?

If the weld procedure they give you calls for it then yeah it should be used, the thing is also called a needle scaler, when I used mine I knock the slag off with it then run it back and forth and put some pressure on it, usualy 15 20 seconds depending how long the weld is. It supposed to relief stress in the weld, I dont know how it does that but it work I been usin them my whole life

For peening a weld an air chipping hammer works better. Had to weld up a crack in a manganese crusher roll with 7/32" Nicromang and had to peen every pass else the manganese would crack alongside the weld.

I've been using needle scalers and air hammers (using the pointed attachment). for years. Hit it quick and clean, weld and repeat.

I like using wire wheel on 4" grinder.
But I was had to pay air compresser so running a grinder off welder was lower cost.
    Did use hammer too.
