Oh for Gawd's sake, you Cinnicut people can't have guns. Cat euthanasia had fallen to barbaric levels. One works with the tools their socialist government allows.

first of all youre talking about welds "breaking". I dont know whatr kind of amatuer world you live in, my welds dont break, and have passed every UT and xray test over hundreds of jobs.

tens years of mountain rescue - 2 as safety director, 10 years as a structural ironworker GF, 12 years as an army engineer with accident investigation. Oh yeah a BS in occupational safety.

just cause you brought it up, MODS your "I forgot my password" features to regain access to my very old account is broken. So I made a new one.

Haven't seen any posts from him in a while, hope he's OK.

Yours looks like it was welded better. That gloss black makes it look professional.

While it's fun to speculate the function of a tool, I know well what it's intended use is:
Piss me off bad enough you get an inexplicable puncture in your sidewall right up against the bead.

Re: Anyone made a kindling splitter?

Some one wonder how the cow feels the branding.
    My reply it painful
He ask how do you know
I replied I do welding and a branding iron is only 850°F and steel is welding is over 2,600°F and that is painful anything over 120° F is painful.
    What to try it ?

I'd be hitting those golf club status while on the ground. I started using that method and not even picking up the wood. Just split it as it lays. Unless you get into some tough stuff

Thanks for all the ideas everyone, made some progress today. Hoping to finish it tomorrow. Any ideas for finish? I'm thinking some sort of wax. Don't want paint.

Re: Anyone made a kindling splitter?

ArcTan, good progress on your splitter.

One suggestion...your splitting blade needs to be about midway, top to bottom. That way when the split gets started by the blade, the angled bars have room to continue the splitting action. With the blade and angle pieces on the bottom, the split will start, but won't finish the job.

Thanks shortfuse. Actually I haven't built the splitting wedge yet. That at the bottom is just the piece that ties the two side pieces together. I just figured it would look cool with the two pieces angled together. I had been planning to have the splitting wedge just a little higher than center. More updates tomorrow (hoping I don't need to be out sanding all day...).

Gotcha! Look forward to your fab of the splitter. The round bar will help solve a problem I had with mine. When I pulled the bars around my circular jig, it imparted a bit of a twist that I almost never got rid of!

There you go. now for some pine chunks. Basswood works great also.
My store bought one has a taller cone in center

Yes, pine and basswood would split easier. But for a test I used dry hard maple. On yours the cone is the starter. I couldn't think of a good way to make a uniform cone that would be strong enough, so I just used slices from a piece of pipe to help spread the pieces once they're split by the wedge. I ended up using paraffin wax as a finish.

Thanks Willie and Shortfuse for the design ideas and measurements.

I wonder how they made the cone. Lathe would be easy enough, but Chinese mass production, I doubt they did that. Maybe some sort of forging?
