Design Of A Ranch Dinner Triangle Bell?? How Big Is TOO BIG!!??

If you are on a "chuckwagon",, I guess there is a limit to a dinner triangle size,,, and weight,,

BUT, if you are gonna fab it, and hang it one time,, is there a problem with "TOO BIG" ??

I have some 1.50" steel solid round bar,,

Could I make a dinner bell out of that? or,, for it to "ring" is there a maximum dimension?

I have 1" round solid steel bar, also,, but, I might have to try 1.50",, bigger IS ALWAYS better,, `~` RIGHT??

Help me design the ultimate dinner triangle,, THANKS!!

Are you using a forge to heat the sections to bend? OA rosebud?

I think either size would work for sound.
I would probably mock it up in some PVC pipes of the same size first. Cheaper and easier to get the proportions right.

Just as a SWAG, I would think the sides need to be 3 feet long to keep the normal diameter to thickness proportions.

    It will be heavy.

If you desire a traditional sound then you will want a specific size. A guy used to purchase his stock from my steel vendor. He used 1/2 to 5/8 as i recall. It may have been special for him. He ordered hundred on lbs at a time.

I have A LOT of 6.5 foot lengths of the 1.5" round solids,,
so, if I wanted it to be welded corners, I could make any size up to 6.5 feet per side, easily,,

I think my 1" diameter solid rounds are either 10 or 12 feet long.

My wife says I never hear the bell on the porch,, so, I am thinking ,,, BIGGER!!

Heavy, yea,, that just means a BIG post to support it,,

Size is going to be inversely proportional to pitch. How do you want it to sound?

Hang the straight piece on a string and give it a whack. It will sound somewhat similar to the finished product.

    This is the best idea.

make it out of 1 1/4" pipe, it'll be lighter and probably louder.

I hear low frequency MUCH better than high frequency,,
THAT is the main reason for making this,,

I can hear the oxygen tank bell at 100 yards, (my neighbor can hear them at 300 yards!! )
I am hoping for louder than the oxygen cylinder bell, because the distance can approach 200 yards.

So, I am hoping for a low tone, heck, I can hardly hear some females on the phone, especially the soft spoken ones,,

You could also make a giant tuning fork- that would be low frequency and it would resonate like crazy! Hit it with a baseball bat and let the vibrations begin!

3 of those 6.5' pieces would make a great one. I don't even need a dinner bell ( I come in to eat because I'm hungry!) but I'm already liking this thread...let's see that Paul Bunyan sized chime!

    Want a loud bell?
Hang an old gas bottle and use some of your 1" stock as a dinger ,
    It will be loud
A good guess is better than a bad measurement

You may get a clank sound like breaking an axel sound rather than that piercing high pitched ring.

Well yea... but it would just look sooo cool! I think he should build it, and if it isn't loud enough, look for one of those old air raid sirens like the towns used to sound off at noon.

Neighbor down the road a piece has an oxygen cylider hanging from a garage rafter that is apparently a chime, as for me, I have a school bell I inherited from my dad, who in turn inherited from his dad, the bell was hung at the country school they both graduated from.Interestingly, my granny taught school there, my grandad was one of her students, I think grandad would have graduated high school in 1920.

There was a Catholic church with a big bell about 6 miles from us when I was a kid. On a clear day you could hear the bell outside...

The bell in our old School House only went clonk. We took it down and found it to be cast iron. It was found to have chunks of flaked rust all over. It was chipped off several times but never hung again to see if it would ring. If it is still around it is probably rusted again. We are one mile from Pacific ocean. www.seasideschool.org
