    Cold rolled flat bar edges

    Random question.

Does cold rolled bar stock always come with the cleaner squared off edge compared to the bull nose shape on hot rolled?

I’ve only bought up to 1x2” cold rolled in the past I’m about to order a $600 piece of 1x6” and need to be sure.

Cold rolled is a lot more dimensionally stable and will have sharper corners compared to hot rolled.

    Yes.

but I have bought steel from a place that didn't know the difference between Hot rolled and cold rolled.

Neither the salesman, the warehouse / saw man, or the warehouse foreman knew or cared.

If I asked for cold rolled they just sold me hot, because that's all they ever had.

Cold roll will always have a smooth edge. https://www.ebay.com/itm/26464041531...gAAOSwIVVccF6n

When buying cold roll vs. hot roll, look for mill scale. If there's mill scale, it's hot roll.

I built a gate with hot rolled rectangle bar. It looked sheared. Very disappointing. Nobody carried cold rolled in the required dimension.

Some of those 1x6 cold rolled items are sheared into shape. The shear won't leave a sharp corner.

I used 3/4x1 and another small rectangle. It looked like it was cut hot. Sharp corners but looked jagged like it had ver broken apart. This was several pieces at 20 feet

I have some 1x6 hor rolled, it is bull nosed. It is a few years old.

Never experienced/noticed the jagged edge on other bar. I suspect it is a an affordable vendor issue.
