    Re: Some Cool History

When I got out of the US NAVY, a friend knew about my welding training I had received in the NAVY,,
he asked his boss about what they paid welders, and brought me an offer,, in writing (they needed welders,, RIGHT then)
The money was outrageously high $$$,, but, it was welding new HIGH buildings, in Richmond VA,, (about 1973)

I was excited about the money,, but, when I heard how high I would be working,, I went to college,, instead,,

That same picture was on the wall of a local steel supplier here in town. Can you imagine if one guy looses his balance and grabs the next guy, like a rope string they are all gone. Not for me

Yea, wouldn't get me up there either. While you're cruising the tubes, check out construction of the Empire State Building as well... I've seen some really cool ones of that as well.

At least some of "today's generation" remembers the past.

This is SpaceX test stacking their newest rocket system. Those guys are almost 300ft in the air but the angle was intentional to honor the old skyscraper builders.

Yeah, yeah, I know - they're in manlifts and wearing harnesses. Still a cool shot on my opinion.

I hate heights! There was a time when I could handle it to a point, BUT in the early 80's I almost took a nose dive off the long hood of a 125 ton locomotive, that cured me! I'm ok as long as I have a good walkway with handrails, anything beyond that is for the monkeys.

The interesting part is be off the ground welding watching 👀 everyone on the grond watch you weld.
I only wish I had a automatic hood when doing that welding.

    Re: Some Cool History

I have some fingerprints left in some strange places. I aint all that much for high ladders. I was never real comfy but did it anyway. It was a bitch really sobering up in the middle of the afternoon and figuring out where i was at. Ha. One time,,, last thing i remember was going to a party friday night in one state and must have blacked right out, came to thursday afternoon on a hi rise in another state, had and still have no memory of hiring on and had been working there since Monday morning.
Off and on 10 years and used a tie off only a couple places and while on hanging pics welding.
I had a file i lost in a fire would have been great for forums.

The good news is most iron works drink on job. That is how some iron works do job. It works as you long walk a straight line on the way home 🏡 no one wants a dui.
