    Sticker Shock

    Back to sticker shock.

Tall fescue grass seed went from $79.00 to $129.00 this season.

I remember when this Kentucky 31 was 30 bucks a bag.

    Every spring I
usually Johnny Appleseed on the bank where the dogs dig up.

    Not this year.

    I’m just throwing hay.

    My attitude has changed.
As long as it’s green I’m good with it.

I can get all the local hay I need “ Pro bono” so to speak.

Now JohnT, run over it with a mulching lawn mower when the hay is dry and then you can spread it evenly.

I ordered 2 4x8 sheets of aluminum checkerplate back in Feb. Just came in but they got 5x10 sheets instead of 4x8. As it turns out the project will come out of one 5x10 so the 2nd one was kind of unnecessary. They said I didn't have to take it, but it was so nice and shiney.... don't think I'll make cattle penning out of that... 2 sheets of 1/8 with a bit of sheer work was $940.

All the metal's cut, but can't weld in the high winds we've been having for about 3 days, or so. Gusts have been constant at around 35+mph. I believe they had upwards of 70mph gusts out in Western OK.

Everything's set for the next relatively calm day. Tomorrow the wind's supposed to die down to around 20mph, which is doable.

Sam, have you ever heard of paint? It's that stuff that protects your projects and stops them rusting

I messed up with steel the other day too. Measured a job up needing 150x100x5 rectangular hollow section. Asked for material quote on 100x50x5 whilst having a brain freeze. Sent customer the quote, she accepted, I ordered the material... and then had to order an additional length of 150x100, that's £200 off my bottom line

Also whatever you do, don't be that idiot hick who accepts contaminated soil. Such an stupid thing to even consider. Soil doesn't improve ruts anyway, they'd be bad as ever in 6 months, only this time you'd have oil traces everywhere. You need to regrade it or lay some hardcore down!

I was pining for a tree pun, but they just aren't poplar. It was ordered for the light duty soldering bench I was working on back in Feb. Since winter has decided to return, it might be time to finish my winter projects...

Ran into some trouble today. The pipe stands were too wobbly when the steel was clamped to the jig. Used up some work time adding jamb nuts to the tubes. Should have done it in the first place.

    Name: chute5.jpg
Views: 241
Size: 213.5 KB I can still half azz weld with the wire welder when it's set up for thicker material. Higher voltage, more amps, bigger puddle. It makes it easier to see what's going on. I'm so out of practice, and still haven't gotten in to see the eye doc, that things are not all that good anymore. I'm thinking I'm not a very good welder these days. I can't believe that I used to regularly weld 14ga with the little wire welder using flux core.

    In the 1950's A36 steel cost was $0.08 per pound. In 1970's it was $0.12. 1980's $0.18.
    Now look at cost today.

I don't know what the school will do on my order for next year. This year was way, way "over budget" already.

Doesn't help that for 6 classes of shop, the entire budget is $1,500 for the year.
That's supposed to work for 2 welding, 1 machining, 2 wood shop and 1 construction class - including all the parts and materials for repairs.

    Laughable...

It's the gun manipulation that's rusty. Took 6 welds to get to this point 14ga is generally a BOOGER with gasless flux core. I'm just getting to the point of remembering how I used to whip over to the thin piece, while keeping heat in the solid piece. Take a few more welds to get back to where it ought to be...........................or not This might be as good as it getsName: unsure.gif

If still was doing work for others I would simply increase the to cover the increase in price.

But today I use what have on hand .
Till price goes down or find scrap metal.

The national average for the price of diesel was $3.191 a gallon the week ending March 15, data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), a non-partisan federal agency, shows.
