Wow, that was a pretty harsh judgement for people you don't really know.

I don't know or care what certifications you have or how good a welder you are (per other thread), and although you sometimes seem capable of writing intelligibly, this sentence looks like either a second-grader (from my era, anyway) wrote it, or it was a quote on a police report about a drunk-driving arrest. Are you trying to prove some point, or does some medical problem give you frequent dizzy spells?

If this was a serious question, please write so I (and other interested readers) can understand it.

For me? you shouldn't have. I mean really, I don't like flowers, you should have saved them for your mama. Although she doesn't deserve them either because she couldn't see you taught English very well.

Re: Root pass on copper backing

I never knew why exactly but we used to use copper backers on full penetration moment connections and beam splices where the backer had the be removed as in bridge code then we were told we couldn't use copper anymore and for a while we use ceramic chiclets which cams on foil with adhesive. The ceramic work great except i alway clamped something under because sometime the glue got to hot and the weld could suddenly fall out on you. Then we couldn't use the ceramic any more and had to use compatible steel backing bars which had to be gouged off after. I assumed the copper got prohibited because it might alloy somehow with the root pass, it was a shame because that stuff worked well - this was all flux core no gas. i got really sick of carbon arcing backing bars with crap access and then having to fill tiny digs with stick where use couldn't see it let alone get a grinder to it - so all tedious die grinding and little fill until the inspector gets tired.

Would ceramic work in this situation? The dual shield wire can weld over it's own slag somewhat because the flux does not gasify to create a shield. I too would like to see a picture and a weld procedure.

Re: Root pass on copper backing

Here's the real thing the original poster did not describe the field conditions with enough specificity. Presumably there is print maybe not because it's a defect but in such a case most of the time there would be a request for information (RFI) submitted so an engineer could specify a weld procedure in consultation with welding contractor with full knowledge of the field conditions which here appear to include limited or no access to the back side of the weld. The stubborn refusal to provide information after you ask a question is a little strange. Weld procedure = fill up the hole with weld metal flush to the back of the hole that's one giant stress riser in what may be a crack prone section "cast mild steel" 3-Ps preheat post-heat & Pray.

Judging from the OPs form of sentence structure hopefully it's available in audio form.

Re: Root pass on copper backing

I think the OP has discovered that he's a "WELDER MY A$$!" He had to ask about the open weld with a copper backer, but in the other thread or on the other site said he was an expert, expert is defined as "EX" is a has been, and a "SPURT" is a drip under pressure, The drip has dropped!

You guys ever think we need laughy face emojis and memes available with the like/dislike "buttons" for this kind of stuff? That way we could just laugh at them without having to create a reply.
