Newbe Needs Help with Fuel Problem on Lincoln Advantage 400 Perkins Engine
Machine starts and runs for a second then goes to low idle then shuts down. IT will restart and do the same thing.
I've changed Both filters and tried again with the same results.
Any Ideas?

When had fuel problems with fuel I would a buy a new fuel line to can of fuel. This way I know where problem is, most time in old equipment it was the fuel line from tank to the pump or carburetor. Sometimes it was a rust in tank too.

Sounds like the low oil shutdown circuit is kicking in!
Stupid question but have you checked the oil level and added if low?

Could be bad too
But all the low oil shutdown circuit that I have seen had led that tells you.

Change the oil and filter the filter might have a bypass and it might be not working just a guess

from what I remember, the perkins diesel has a little lever on the lift pump to prime the fuel filter. Can you work that lever and feel resistance? Then will the engine start and keep running or does it still go to low idle and quit? You have a fuel supply line breaking down internally and stopping the fuel from flowing to the lift pump OR the lift pump is bad.

Could be sucking air on the suction side of the pump.

I had test tank about 1/2 gal that could vise grip above the carburetor and line to the carb. I got a low cost forklift.
Then new if was a fuel problem or something else.
The one problem was most hard to find was old forklift. It had new carburetor, new coil and all new lines .
But the problem was the distributor hard a worn bearing. Replaced the bearing and ran great 👍.

Dave, it's a perkins diesel...no carb and no electrical distributor.

I just pointing out in gasoline engines problems I have had.
Most problems I had with diesel was a fuel line or tank problem
But point was to a clean tank and line to isolated the problem.

OK Dave. Just thought that you went off on a walkabout. But yeah, it does sound like a hose problem or junk in the tank

Re: Newbe Needs Help with Fuel Problem on Lincoln Advantage 400 Perkins Engine
Some of perkins diesel engines use distributor and one pump, this can make harder to find the problem.
I like Cat engines as they use a injector pump for each piston.
But do most common problems first the fuel lines and tank.
After that I just have the injector pump rebuilt.
Saves time and money.
If Cat they are easier to rebuild in the feild.

Shine a flashlight after dark into the tank (Don't use a torch).... could be an in tank filter or I've seen little balls of solder roll around in there and block off the fuel leaving. Engine quits and it rolls away. Starts back up and it got drawn into the inlet again.

might be anything blocking the flow of fuel from inside the tank. But I'd start with the cheap stuff first.

I guess a arc from welder, match or a lighter is out too.
