Question D1.1 Code: Flare V Groove Weld Size

I'm practicing for D1.1 CWI code test and this question has me stumped.

"What is the effective size flare-V groove weld that the engineer can take credit for when two 3" bars are welded with GMAW the joint is filled flush?"

According to Code Clinic workbook the answer is 1 1/8". Referencing table 4.1

    Table 4.1 says

    Flare-V Groove

    GMAW 3/4 R

Can anyone explain how the answer 1 1/8" was calculated?

    I've got it.

    R is the radius of the base metal. Radius of 3" bar would 1 1/2". 1 1/2 x 3/4" = 1 1/8"
