Once again, I really appreciate the input from everyone who has posted on my question. Here in about an hour, I’m calling the Technical college to find out what each course offers, and likely sign up.

If you wanna be a repair and construction mechanic being a good stick welder jumps out like a big zit on Sophia's nose. Its noticeable both ways, when u can and when u cant. I bid a tank blast job a while back, the guy in charge was,,, well,,, ok but they had it out of order which was fine by me but he asked if we could do the welding which is really what it was anyway,,,, but,,, so,,, It needed a ladder repair off the catwalk and I knew some of the plant guys but I fuss a little and run some big ole shiners on it right at face height. We left for a bit and some guys go look at what we were doing, my bud says,,, they come back and said,, "you wanna see some welding go look at that"
We had bid on some different stuff in the place and was wondering if they gonna ask for some paperwork and I really didnt want that. Was all vert and OH and the sample wasd about a foot from your face when a guy walked up, was a cant miss. They never asked again if we could do something.
Depending on position, it isnt always good for biz everyone knows you, its heartbreaking to find out not everyone loves me or likes me, I dated a lot of sisters around the place,,, ha but ask any of the other trades poeople or business owners or people work for them we got a reputation of knowing which end of the rod to put in a stinger. I fix a job the other day, guy tried it with a little flux machine, he was a welder in maint at GM. I am not sure what those guys did and I grant it was a little difficult but the **** fit and totally skipping one side should have been welded first didnt help.

Just had a conversation with a rep. From the college. Industrial maintenance welding course is required first, as it teaches all aspects of preparation of metals for welding, plus covers hands on stick, mig, tig, oxy-acetylene, etc, and is a full foundational course. If I want to take the advanced mig/tig next year, I can do that. They allow me to use my own protective gear, and it reduced my tuition cost by about $300, so I’m signed up and begin classes next month.

That is really good, sounds perfect. The torch is another matter all its own and in the same league. A guy can use a torch and a welder is worth 2x regular as one cant and on occasion worth more than that.

More and more is done wire and plasma all the time but for equipment repair sticks are so widely used and available and if he can become profeccient in all position with it the others are relatively easy. I like the progressive nature of that, move on to advanced wire and tig after the fact. I remember talking with an instructor said, if there is something you need its ok, we do that but he steered me off some shop type thing to the buzzer with 13 a couple days then to 10 and 18 and test plates and then off to the Ironworkers hall. He knew I wasnt cut out to tig bow rails in a small factory somewhere.
I can actually tig fairly well, not refined but I can get it to stick and most people dont realize I dont know anything about it. But I dont really care all that much for fussy stuff any7way, tired of all that and if I gotta work would just as soon kick the crap out oif stuff with a hammer and a torch, rig and erect etc.
Ironworkers have the best stories, how exciting is your day tig a handrail unless you get to do it marina or beach with a view.

If I had to pick a trade twould be electric sign installer. If a guy is doing it right he has a helper to drive the truck and run the crane and I like a man basket vs a ladder truck. A lot of the installers are "part time" welders so to speak, similar to farmer welders, its noticeable when a guy actually understands difference between AC and DC. Can even do those "uphill" welds.

I can do fine craft work when I have to but its so tedious iI dont enjoy it, also kind of tired of some projects we do, rebuild and paint.

I’m coming in at around $530 +/- a dollar or two, because I don’t need their protective gear [auto darkening helmet, welding gloves,jacket, etc]. . Not bad for 15 weeks with supplies and such included!

To the OP, for what it's worth, I went to some one week classes on TIG, MIG, and flux core MIG at Lincoln Electric and then a two week class on Oxy Acetylene cutting and welding at the Hobart School.

You can tell the difference immediately in fellow students on who is taking the class seriously or not.

Do they show up on time with all required gear?

Do they have their phones with them in the welding booth?

Are they asking questions?

Are they taking long breaks or lunches?

Are they trying to fill the plate when padding beads or joints or just running random beads?

This is your money so keep that in mind.

Some places allow you to bring in a project from home to work on while others restrict you to the items in the curriculum.

This will be some of the best money spent on welding so get your money's worth.

Good for you. Been thinking of taking the classes at the central technical college think it would be fun. Trying to talk my brother to go with me. In GA if your passed the age of 62 you can take the classes for free you just pay for the class materials. That and the VA I’m golden.
