Are the rods themselves the same, just known by different names?

Couldn't find out with a search. I have chamfer rods, pretty fun to use. Very helpful sometimes.

Completely different. Chamfer rod is more like a flux coated electrode like a 6011. Carbons for air arc gouging are generally ( but not always) copper coated graphite.

Carbon arc for heating or a carbon air arc torch for gouging? The copper coated carbons I mentioned are for gouging. Not sure if they work in a carbon arc torch for heating, never used one, no intention too.

The copper coated gouging electrodes work fine in a dual carbon arc torch. I have used mine to heat, braze weld, and weld. Single carbon arc can also be used to weld.

It's a poor replacement for an Oxy-Acetylene torch however. The gas torch can do things the carbon torch can't, and it can do anything it can much better.

I made a carbon arc torch and tried it out today with gouging rods from eBay. It worked but not very well. Guess I'll put it away. But it was interesting to make.

Chamfering.. don't do it on a regular basis. The one time I did it was on 1/8" or 3/16". Can't remember which. But the rods are handy to have around if the need comes up. I may have to use them on a trailer sometime soon. I've got to remove the jack and I'm not sure the welds can be cut loose.
