right , pajamas too, otherwise kids crawling around fireplace and little old ladies making tea, would catch fire. the type i would reccomend is the same kind my mom put us in, in our first few yrs, which a one piece body suit type, that have the built in feet, zipper up the front, and a little horiz lap that snapped across the neck. im sure they make them in larger sizes

    pros:
    1. no pockets to catch metals/debri
    2. no need to get dressed for work in morning - just get u and go
    3. boots optional - as underside of feet have wear resistant coating
    4. long sleeved has elastic wrists, so accomodate tig gloves
    5. can easily found at big dominate retailers (walmart, target, etc), near the lingerie section
    6. come in 3 colors, for whichever gender u identify urself as
    blue - for males
    pink - for females
    yellow - all other genders

    cons:
    1. no hoodie attachment
    2. no pocket for phone (which many need to function)
    3. labor/time consuming, when one needs to take a dump

Halloween costumes flame retardant. But not light prof and will tear easily.

Do you really want Mickey Mouse 🐭 yelling like a sailor ⛵ after hot 🔥 metal runs down the inside of shirt to the pants 👖.

I wear loose-fitting jeans and cotton button-down shirts. Usually Carhartt. Since when are jeans tight-fitting? I don't buy things for fashion or looks, screw that. I buy them for *work* and personal protection. Also, steel-toe leather boots. Good ones, like older Red Wings, Wesco, and Whites. 5 days a week.

Not to Hijack this thread entirely. But being new to this. I am curious what clothing people have had the best luck with. I hear a lot of advice. And I could Imagine Some things better than others.

I do ride motorcycles so I know some clothing will actually protect ya form something and others are not so good. But Being a Bread baker for 15 years clothing tended to be rather light as you didn't want it ending up in mixers or dough or whatever.

Love some recommendations maybe more what someone might think works but to avoid.

Oh and on boots. Steel toe or just a tough leather pair? I bought some ages ago for wilderness fire fighting. They are good and broke in. But no steel toe. Standing in hot ash and all..

Depends on what you work with. For me, I wear western slip-on boots, jeans and a cotton T shirt. For a welding jacket, I prefer to wear a BDU top (mine are USMC, but I'm sure the other branches use similar if not the same material). If I'm doing a lot of high amp stuff, I have a Lincoln leather jacket. Buy a good hat, too. One with a brim or maybe use an FR bandana. You want to be able to cover your ears with it. Steel toes are nice if you're worried about stuff that weighs more than 20 pounds and less that a couple hundred pounds falling on your feet. Anything less than about 20lbs and you probably don't need steel toe boots. Anything big, and you'll end up with a broken foot that also stuck inside your steel toe. Pick up some good safety glasses, too. Both clear and shade 3. Shade 5 is useful, too.

100% cotton has good fire resistant properties, NOMEX has excellent fire resistant properties, I use cotton jeans that fit over the boot cuff, and a light nomex jacket, I also have denim shirts. You can get a leather welding jacket and pants, or overalls or chaps. BUT, at some point the gear becomes so hot to wear that it's very uncomfortable. Check into wildland fire coveralls, they're nomex and available in many colors.
52ford, I have to disagree with you about the 20 pounds, I watched a draught gear pin, weight 37 lbs for a Locomotive roll off the edge of the pit and land on the mechanics boot toe(not steel), the dumb sob finished installing the pin before removing his boot. His big toe was flattened to about 1/4 inch thick and bleeding profusely, crushed, it was pieced back together because he didn't want to amputate it. He should have been fired for violating the steel toe rule, but sheeet happens.

You know how those Carhartt canvas trousers can be real stiff when they're new? I tried to soften up a pair one day by soaking them in Downey fabric softener. Well, little did I know at the time that liquid fabric softener will make fabric flammable. So on the job, a spark landed on the bottom cuff of one leg and up in flames it went. It's a good thing there was a water spigot nearby on the wall. I ran over there and put my leg under the spigot and turned the water on full blast. Lesson learned on that one.

I had forgotten about this thread

I'll admit to having burned 6011s in my pajamas more than once. One of the downsides to having the shop near the house.

I've burn 6011 in cut off shorts and boots once. Hindsight the boots could have been an issue if a cherry fell in there. lol.

I always use leather coat and heavy long pants since I was about 11 or 12. Found the hard way.

    Re: Need help with clothing

As I started today, reading this thread, I finally found that 52Ford had posted my answer,, WELD NAKED!!

but, I do have something to add,,

wear a leather welding apron. the apron is not tight at the waist, unless you tie the waistband too tight.
There is nothing to catch grinding dust (on the apron)

Heck, this and the S&W forum got me thinking,,
Horse hide is only half as thick, and half as heavy as cow hide.

I am gonna ask Santa for a horse hide welding apron,, so that I can weld nude,,,

I’m sorry but how the hell did you manage to melt you pants to yourself tig welding? I could see it happening if you were using an oxygen lance (I’ve set myself on fire a couple times using one of those damn things). I seriously want to hear this story!
