    Need help with clothing

Hi. i currently tig weld only and cant seem to find any clothing that is suitable for me. i was using a baggy hoodie and sweatpants and as you can guess hoodie caught on stuff and pants melted to me. hoodie has been replaced by a carhart heavyweight loose fit shirt ( but the chest pocket keep filling up with metal). still cant find anything somewhat suitable for pants? does anyone make welding pants with like an elastic waistband, or pants that are comfortable, dont really need a belt and are roomy? i hate tight pants like jeans. suggestions and advice please! thank you and have a great day

I never understood the whole "sweatpants" thing.

Either you are from the inner city and have no idea what it is to work a blue-collar job

Or you are a fat guy.

Tig welding is about the safest method of welding as far as getting burned

Not sure why you are burning your pants

Do you ever respond to a thread and then halfway through think to yourself...

    Why did I even respond.

Carhartt, Duluth, and a bunch of other companies sell canvas work pants. They usually have a straight or relaxed fit. Honestly, if a pair of Duluth Trading Co work pants aren't roomy enough, just ditch the whole pants thing and buy a leather skirt.

All of my welding shirts either have no pockets, or a flap over the pocket. I usually just wear a USMC BDU long sleeve.

Got on line or to your welding supplier, they sale welding specific clothing. I assume you mean you get metal in pockets from grinding? Often pocket are on inside of welding clothing….

    How about an apron?

    Re: Need help with clothing

I use clothes (pants and shirts) that for welding.
Then use a leather coat and gloves made for arc welding.

All my sink is covered with any arc welding. Any arc light that hits the skin will burn.

The only time I do not use leather is for torch work.

    Re: Need help with clothing

I do TIG fulltime in the aerospace industry, I only wear Duluth pants. I don't remember exactly which ones, I have to look at the tag in them every time I buy new ones but I think it's the flex firehose pants? They're made with 3% spandex in them so they have some nice stretch to them if you're bending and stooping they don't bind up on you. They also have a crotch gusset so there's no blowing out the crotch if you kneel down one day.

They have another style of pants that's a bit heavier fabric, they don't have the spandex but it does have some elastic in the waistband which makes them super comfortable. Those are also full work pants with pockets and the whole nine yards.

All of them hold up well to heavy titanium sparks, so I'm sure they'd handle steel sparks just fine as well.

For shirts I just do a button up, usually a Duluth brand but I often wear a t-shirt under it for heavy grinding because a lot of the lighter weight button ups do not stand up to sparks well. A normal cotton t-shirt helps protect my delicate and soft underbelly from hot titanium sparks so it doesn't look like I have chickenpox when I go home.

All arc welding (Stick, Mig and Tig) has ultraviolet wavelength. There are three categories of ultraviolet light wavelengths, UVA, UVB, and UVC.
All three will burn and just light.

I've seen some guys wearing FR pants over their regular pants, made of the same stuff that they make the green welding jackets of.

Could simply put a welding jacket and chaps on over your cloths.

Could wear bib overalls, a T shirt, and a welding jacket.

You are not going to find anything soft like sports clothes, that stuff is all made of Nylon, Polyester, Rayon (read, plastic ). Everything is going to be heavy, loose fitting, FR cotton.

I just wear blue dickies like the Maytag man. flaps on the shirt pockets keep the grinding dust out.

Any type of poly or spandex in them and it will melt. Nothing wrong with heavy sweat pants as long as they are 100% cotton.

    Re: Need help with clothing

Spent today "welding". That really means grinding, building a jig & running when I ran out of C25.
In hot weather that means for me, shorts, (whatever Mrs. B bought me I don't really like, burn holes less tragic), I wear an old T shirt & put a welding jacket over bare arms 20 times a day when I make a two minute weld.

My favorite non welding boots have a bit of synthetic fabric exposed, so I switch to leather when welding.

That applies to MIG & stick welding. TIG I wear whatever I was wearing, might not wear the suit I'll be buried in, but everything else is fine.

Winter, it's Carhartt overalls & a cotton Carhartt jacket. Super cold: Arctic Carhartt coveralls.

An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
