Connex container repair

I am getting ready to strip weld and paint my 2 containers and have been troubled by getting the walls bent back in to shape so I can weld the scratches shut. There's a couple forklift dent/scratches in the side walls that have deformed the crease patterns and put a horizontal fold/line where the metal rusted through with a couple pinholes. I was planning to get the crease patterns back into shape then clean the rust up to weld over the holes. I am hoping someone has a better recommendation than a sledgehammer an oxy heating tip to beat it into shape.

Just remember when you work on it, it is likely made of corten steel and not mild steel. Corten has different fatigue characteristics than mild steel and you will want to either MIG weld it or if you stick weld it, stay with a 7018 rod. Corten has chromium, nickel, copper and other alloying agents in it to make it weather resistant. I am not sure how those alloying compounds react to heat for bending. I would probably stick to mechanical bending only.

I have fixed a few containers full of rust holes and fork holes. They suck to weld. Cutting out the bad spots and patching can be done. But very tedious. When I did then cosmetics weren't necessary so we just sheared patches of 12g or 14g and overlapped them. Looked like ****e but was effective at weather proofing/rodent stopping. I see people doing all kinds of neat thing with containers. And boy am I happy I am not the welder working on them.

When I used to pull containers, occasionally I had to take them to the repair yard. They never bent them back............they always cut out the bad area, and patched in a good piece that matched the corrugation pattern.

I think the shipping company required this kind of repair. They stack them mondo deep in the container yard, and about 3 times as deep on the ships. They have to withstand the load, so no other way to repair them.

For a shop, or storage, can.................Hell, I'd just patch it the best way I could. All it has to do is keep the water out.

Here are the pictures of some of the damage. its not bad but would prefer to get it alll in best shape before i go and paint etc so i dont have to play with it again for another 5 years

Get a couple pieces from another container, and patch over it.

Too hard to find. Some simple plate, something u can find, 12, thru 10 ga, even some 14. You could even bend it, hammer it on, make patches, seal weld, sand grind dress the slag and spatter off and spray can.
This type of thing is a simple repair.

I c the pics now. Get a couple sledge ajd a helper. Pound all u can. After that slit the worst to relieve, pound it, close gaps, make a bit but a scuff pad and some paint make up for a whole lot.
Paint a mountain scene there or paint it like some rocks, now those dents are art work.

right, id get rid of the rust pretty much, and brush/roll on some oil based paint. but more importantly, id crib/block the thing u, so it can vent underneath, and not be drawing moisture/wet from grass,soil,etc

The container is getting moved to a pad here shortly hence i wanted to get it in the best condition possible before moving it away from the house where i have supplies handy. my biggest intent is to make sure it will last the longest possible. if cleaning it all up and repainting it saves me weeks and months worth of maintenance down the road id rather get it fixed up now before its in place and has equipment in it than try to work around issues later. I will be putting a door in the side here shortly so have to do a bit of cutting any ways.

^^^^This is pretty much my thoughts exactly. I'm not even sure I would weld up the dents/grooves, might just cover with FRP and paint.

Unless the damaged area is so small that I can make it completely disappear with the door cut, I always put the doors in the least-damaged / undamaged areas of the wall if possible, for the exact reason of getting some good material on hand for future use. I've had a few container jobs recently, including the base-lock welding part of setting up a triple-tower of 15 of them for sound abatement beside of a metal shredder.
