Trailer jack idea is interesting. Not sure if height would work.
I frequently find damaged jacks being tossed , some of which
are only damaged at the swivel mount bracket thing. Mostly top
    crank type though.Also occasionally find 7/8 - 1 1/4 threaded
studs and nuts being discarded. They could be used for fine
    adjustment, although not Acme thread.

2 3/8 oilfield tubing fits inside of 2 7/8 oilfield tubing. Real common around West Texas, but maybe not so plenty where you are.

2" schedule 40 pipe will also fit inside 2 7/8 tubing. There is no seam in the tubing, It is plenty strong for a jack stand.

Yea, that seems high for a lot of jobs unless you cut the bottom down, and then you lose adjustability. I might have to make one next winter just to see how it goes...

    Telescoping pipe sizes

not to stray TOO far off topic but side winders are okay for drill press tables too

Edit. Oops I see whtbaron already mentioned this.

But how much cooler would it be to have power feed on your drill press table?

I never thought of mounting it upside down... mine is loose at the base to allow the table to swing sideways, which comes in really handy sometimes with the x/y vise.

Why not buy a pipe stand and add a piece of channel with tabs to set on top ? That's what i did. I also made a light duty one using part of a pipe clamp slider. I have a angle iron "V"
and a channel attachment for the top.

Pipe clamp slider would be pretty slick. I may use that.
I saw a pipe stand yesterday that used a similar arrangement.
Is that base a blind flange?

Yes, we did a demo job and I salvaged the blind flange. I use this all the time for light work. I made it for a quick adjustment stand for my HF 4x6bandsaw and my permanent mount portaband.
