I was chatting with an Employee yesterday and he brought up welding masks and are they PPE and thus would need to be supplied by Our company. When I was coming up no way where shields provided by any of the companies I worked for or with. Has Osha changed that? does anyone have any insight on this thanks

im not sure if theres any rule or law that says the company has to provide any ppe but maybe so ? our company provides every bit of ppe needed. including speedglas papr which are rather expensive. i guess it must still cost less than having somebody get hurt with their harbor freight helmet they brought from home

Exactly. I bought a dozen Huntsman//Jackson 411p passive hoods for $39 each on closeout from ENCO before they got swallowed up. I offer one or they can bring their own in. Gloves are Harbor Freight tig gloves. Eye and ear wear are from Amazon, cheapest I can get. Respirators are 3M P100.

An employee did catch themself on fire a couple weeks ago. So I brought in fire blankets and water bottles for each station. That was a hot topic.

I think most weldors have a preference so buy their own helmet. It is PPE but also a requirement for the job. Mechanics on the other hand generally have to buy all their tools which can cost thousands. Company only supplies specialty tools. Buying a welding helmet, cutting goggles, hand protectors and the odd other items isn't a big deal in my opinion.

the problem with a company buying good equipment is some guys dont take care of it. kick it around on the floor. let it roll around in the truck bed. let it fall from 100' up.

im still using the exact speedglas papr i was provided 4.5yrs ago. works good as day 1 because i take care of it and respect my ppe

I think that at least basic PPE should be provided my the employer. Gloves, glasses, face shields, respirators, dust masks, ear pro.... you're investing in the safety of your employees. You're looking at what, $50 for a good half face respirator, Tillman (or equivalent) gloves are $30ish, a face shield is like $25. Ear plugs and safety glasses are stupid-cheap. A7 cut resistant work gloves are $5 a pair... PPE is cheap. Hospital visits are not.

In the plants I’ve worked at, maintenance department
would have one welding helmet for everyone to use.
Most guys buy their own rather than stick their head in a
communal helmet,particularly if some employees
are not frequent bathers.
