The Navy yard here in VA will pull your qualifications and send you back to weld school if they see any type of weave or cup walking. Unfortunately. Pretty bad *** boat though. I worked at a place here in VA that did work on mega yachts. Nothing as major as that but still pretty cool. We had to cut a big hole in the side to replace 2 generators. Lloyds of London had an inspector there to insure everything was how the insurance company wanted it. the inside of the engine rooms on those things are spotless too. socks only, no boots allowed! I would love to take pictures of the place I work now but I don't like Federal prisons so I guess I can't. Good job and keep it up.

    Re: Ocean Peace Pics

We had a Lloyds of London inspector on a double bottom grain hauler ship last summer. Talk about nightmare! 100% UT. He was rejecting welds even if they passed the UT but they may of had not enough weld wrap on the ratholes in his opionion.
Or he felt anything with his bare hand.
First of all there was at least 8" to 2' of silt and water standing in each section when the ship went on drydock. Then we had to put cement down to keep the water out of the area that we were working in. Get surface supplied air and start cutting. The worst ive ever been on. Once we got all the bad plates out and the water started to dry up it wasnt so bad. I did get shocked pretty bad.

We ended up cutting out and replacing close to 1/3 of the plate under that boat. It was in that bad of shape. There had been little or no maintenance on that boat in 20 years.

Our inserts are usually steel. The only time they usually use Copper Nickle is for piping if they need to mod a copper nickel pipe they will just cut it and tie into the existing or add new sections.

    More pics!!!!! Woo hoo
Thank you CrabFisherman I am going with Gallow's This is the base of the gallows that was welded. It goes down thru 3 decks to support the weight and torque.

Btw I hope the last photo does not offend anyone. If it does I'll take it down. I just think its hillarious most of us have been approached by a girl like this lol
This is one of the reasons why I weld soo much if you know what I mean.... Anything to get away from a STAGE 5 KLINGON that wont loose my number Bahahahaha

    Happy Welding Everyone

I found a better example of a rattlesnake tig weld on the boat today.
One of our pipe welders tig welded 2 flanges together. Looks good.

    Hi Allan!

I thought you might get a kick out of this. US FAB built this barge in the bay....but the barge is acctually taller than the header of the bay opening. So now they have to rebuild the bay opening.
This may have been intentional or could have been some last minute mods to the build that caused this. As soon as I hear I will let you know.

    Re: Ocean Peace Pics

Hi Galen, one of our past students(currently working for US Fab) stopped by the other day, I believe that he mentioned the door issue, as I understand it, they knew that they were going to need to modify the exit entrance. I have worked a few jobs where similar issues were addressed by "temporarily" modifying building structures to accomodate equipment builds. Also worked a few where our shop was chosen due to the size of the fabricated items and the inability to easily transport or move them, they had to ship 130' plus length and 13' wide by 11' tall bridge assemblies. Hauled those down Marine Drive to Troutdale. Cool stuff, Galen, stay safe and continue to enjoy yourself. Best regards, Allan

Possibly intentional - they can get a door enlarged and offset the cost by passing it (or a portion of it) off to the client.

Good question I'd like to know too. I didnt get to see the engineering specs. I imagine it is significant. We added 16' of width and a bulbus bow that adds around 20' of length. Part of the additions it is being used for fuel tanks more processing room and freezer hold capacity.

    Re: Ocean Peace Pics

I Started on a new project this week.
The Klamath a barge that is getting re-skinned on the bow. The owners wanted it to be ice Breaker capable. Were removing the old 1/2" skin and replacing it with 1"

We cut out appox 35,000 lbs of 1/2" steel just from the bow.
I personally caught and loaded 2/3 rds of that steel with a scissor lift. Then I had to dump it into the recycle bin by HAND. Most of the chuncks were 22-24"+ wide and 4-5' tall.
And we did it in 3 days. I'm a little sore n tired.

They originally started on this a few weeks ago. First they had to come in and grind all the paint off the old steel. Then they fit up new 1" stiffner brackets.

Once they got all that done they moved it to drydock and the scrapping began.
