How to use the last bit of MIG wire?

The small spool of NR211 flux core wire just ran out. I pulled out the wire left in the electrode line before putting a new bigger spool. The pulled wire is several ft and I would hate to throw it. Is there any way to put it to use?

I’ve worked with guys, who would pull the self shielded wire into the K-126 Lincoln gun. Then start a new spool, to push the wire on into the weld. Now 99.9 % of the time we used 5/64 wire. I tried this only one time. The wire jammed, and I had a he!! of a time getting the wire out of the gun. :realmad:

Unfortunately "mig" has become a universal term for wire feed welding. I didn't get much welding info in my Machinist apprenticeship but it did get into smaw, fcaw, gmaw etc., but it did differentiate mig from flux core.

Steppin' over a dollar to pick up a dime. Yeah, I've noticed the tendency to group flux core with solid wire mig welding, but just let it go. I'm too old to pick small fights!!

No, it's too brittle to use as tie wire or for hanging parts to paint.

And since it's only a matter of pennies, just toss it whenever you run out without feeling guilty.

Yeah, it really is. Nr211 will snap in half if bent over 3/4 way around, so by then it's been compromised quite a great deal. I have several spool ends of it because i couldn't even manage to use it for tying up wiring. It snapped every time.

Buy larger rolls of wire so you change your rolls less often. Part of wire welding is the small bit of waste (basically the gun length) when changing a roll. It's just part of it. Toss it, change the roll and start welding again.

Hunt up the guy in the shop who brags how well he can weld razor blades together and have him weld the leftover onto the end of the new spool. Then grind it to proper diameter and use it. You'll still loose about 4" but the TIG genius can use that for filler.

Don't forget to write up the proper form and put it in the suggestion box so the company bean counter can reward you appropriately.
