So I am trying to install the new water pump on the 920 Cat loader and something is not making sense. The drive end of the pump has a bolt in it, and the manual shows that bolt there, but the loader has a splined drive that should be fitting into it. Wrong pump?

I wish it was that simple.... she's got a headache...

It's the drive for the air pump, so I'm wondering if there's options for with/without air brakes.

Where is the pic of the one that came off?? :blob1:

is it similar/different??
I was documenting the whole process to post, because I wasn't finding much for info when I went to do it. Even the repair manual is woefully inadequate and I paid good money for that sucker. I was looking at ports, making sure everything externally lined up... the one thing I did not think of was the drive... because I was buying a brand new pump right from CAT....

You have the wrong pump. Parts guys suck anymore. I just sent six Cummins cylinder liner kits back and hopefully I get the right ones on Tuesday.
Phluck

The only other possibility was that I was supposed to remove a part in the center.... but I didn't want to mess with it in case it had to go back. Good thing I didn't.

I don't know modern Cats, but the "Wrong Pump" seems likely to me too.
Since that pump appears to drive off the gear in the side of the case, the only other possibility I see is that the bolt/washer are to hold the drive gear and bearing in place on the pump during shipping, and removing it might expose a splined hole underneath. The new question that would bring up is what does the spline drive, then?

Yes, a picture of the old pump would help.
I'm just hoping the old pump is still at the dealership 2 hrs away on Monday when I call... if the right pump is unobtainium, I'll need it to rebuild...

Not until I talk to the dealer on Monday...

The more I look at it, the more I'm convinced it's the wrong pump. There are 2 pictures in the manual, and I thought one was just a more detailed drawing of the seals, but now it looks like it's with and without the air pump drive. Would have been a good thing to mention. This is the listing I found on Amazon that at least showed me which bolts to remove and it looks like the pump I brought home ....

Unfortunately this is the only pic I took of removal of the old pump... no view of the drive.
Here is a shot from the manual. I wish they'd have included the same detail of the pump that they did on how tight to make the fan belts. Note that bolt #5 is torqued to 32 ft. lbs and is described as holding the gear. That doesn't sound like a temporary shipping arrangement to me. In the bottom pic it appears to be a recessed allen bolt, in the top it's an open hex like the one I bought. Pretty sure this is the wrong part #.
If they can give the part # for the installation tool, the numbers for the 2 different pumps would have been a nice addition...

Per the illustrations in the manual there's no doubt they gave you the wrong pump.
Yea... nothing like having to learn the hard way. A little explanation in the manual would have been a good thing. I've seen John Deere manuals that walk you through the whole process from hood removal to sheet metal replacement. I found out I was trying to access the last bolt on the side panel the wrong way too. I think that one just might get a new access hole with a cover plate before I put it back together.

That and we need the old pump I handed in as a core. I'm hoping it's still on the shelf on Monday...

Cat manuals will drive you nuts, When I'm assembling an engine I usually have 3-4 bookmarks to refer back and forth to different sections of the manual.
Plus it helps to speak their "language", And Cummins is worse and has a different "language".
In this case there really is no language. That pic I posted is all the information in the manual about water pumps. Even if it had been labelled as 2 different part numbers or with/without air brakes it would have served as a heads up in terms of what to be aware of.

High winds Friday nite had 3 ft. high drifts in the lane yesterday, so I'm back to the old 4020 with the straight blade. Wife had a Walmart attack yesterday and left before I could get the tractor out. I'm amazed she got through with snow over the hood on the Rav4. Those studded snow tires are amazing.

Well, the good news is that they still have my core on the shelf, and there are 2 part numbers. Bad news is that nobody seems to be able to tell the difference between the 2 part numbers... should find out tomorrow if the pump I need is available...

Let me guess, that was in the "Specifications" section of the manual, not "disassembly and assembly" section? They really make you flip back and forth when they could just be straightforward with the whole process. Then there is also the "Testing and Adjusting" section too.
You made me dig back through the manual and you're right... that pic I showed was from "Specifications". Nothing useful in "Testing and Adjusting" other than a repeat of the belt tension chart and instructions on how to install a thermometer for testing temps... not my problem. There are more pictures in the "Disassembly and Assembly" section, but it wouldn't have helped me. They tell you to remove the hood (you really don't have to) and while the external pics show a unit with the air pump (of which there are also 3 versions) , all the internal pics are of a pump without the spline drive. It's just a rehash of the useless info in the first section.

The only other pics I've found online were of the non-splined pump, and they were just there to tell me it wasn't available. The book I bought is the factory repair manual. I know Holt is an earlier version of the Caterpillar but no, I've never delved into the history beyond their 1970's parts supplies...

If there is 2 part numbers, can't they order the opposite of the one you have? Sounds like you have some really stupid parts guys.
It's not really his fault, and my machines are older than he is. When he looks at the parts breakdown of the 2 different numbers, they show all the identical parts inside, which really doesn't make sense either. 1st pump was 2 weeks away, 2nd number is only 3 hrs away in Winnipeg, so hopefully something works out. If it turns out to be another lame duck I'll get the kit and rebuild the core. So much for ordering a new pump because it would be faster...

I'd pull both gears off, install the spline gear on the new pump, the new pump gear on the core and tell them thank you very much.
I was thinking about that too.... it could happen yet. The problem is that the 2 pumps were 2 hrs apart when I discovered the problem. It turns out the "right" pump in Winnipeg isn't there, but they did have a rebuild kit. If there is anything wrong with the impeller or other internals on my core, we could be doing the internal swap as you suggest...

If you swap the gear, you may as well have the seal kit. Removing the gear and bearings will leave the shaft unsupported and could break the carbon seal faces. Then you're back to just putting the seal kit in your old pump.
Turns out the "on again, off again" "right" pump was there after all. They have it at the shop to compare and they're pretty sure it's the right pump this time. I've got a funeral tomorrow and had an appt. today so I'll get up there Friday to pick it up... 4 hrs round trip so I'm hoping the weather co-operates. Put new studs on my Rav today for the trip. A week late and a dollar short...

Road trip lol

edit. I’m sure it’s not lost on you, but you could be in Mexico in four hours
Did the last minute scramble today to get my snow tires on... my mechanic is leaving for the Dominican for 2 weeks tomorrow morning...

You're lucky, my Cummins cylinder liner kits were ordered by the engine serial number, wrong. There is 5 different options for liners in this engine, after a bunch of measuring and relaying info the parts guy says "Oh, you have one of those"
The ironic part is that we waited for 3 weeks for the "wrong" pump to be shipped up out of the US when the "right" ( I hope) pump was sitting on a shelf 3 hrs away. Have to wonder about their inventory control...

I have heard that , "you have one of those " phrase often when somebody is describing a European built John Deere to the local dealer...

Yea.... I'm glad they found the right replacement.... I hope...
